Posted 3/9/2023

The American Society for Automation in Pharmacy (ASAP) latest release, Version 5.0 is now available. More than 40 stakeholders participated in four conference calls between November 2022 and January 2023, to review proposed changes to 4.2B. The proposed changes were the result of webinars, surveys with PDMPs, and input from other stakeholders on ways to improve the standard. The stakeholders participating in the updating process included close to 20 PDMP administrators from a variety of states, as well as pharmacy system vendors and drug chains. It has been over three years since 4.2B was released.

The latest version includes 44 new data fields that address challenges with compliance monitoring, data integrity, and patient matching. Also, new codes were added to certain fields to increase the granularity of the data. Four fields have been repositioned or decommissioned. The decommissioned fields will not be used in V5.0 and moving forward. There is also clarification on the use of the terms Required and Situational, with many fields previously designated Situational now designated as Optional.

The latest version will enable PDMPs to increase the scope and detail of the data collected in their monitoring efforts.

A copy of Version 5.0 can be purchased by going to asapnet.org/publications.
